Staffan inaugurates Wild Wonders 5th exhibition

The fifth Wild Wonders of Europe indoor exhibition in China, opens Saturday 27/8 2011 in Chengdu, capital of the Sichuan province. Staffan Widstrand will be there, also holding a couple of photographic workshops and meeting with Wild wonders of Europe’s Chinese partners to discuss further cooperation.

Big Rewilding story in National Geographic

A 12-page story, shot on assignment in the Rewilding Europe areas in Spain and Portugal for NGM Netherlands, is published in the magazine’s September issue. The opening spread can be seen here. NGM Staff writer Pancras Dijk visited the rewilding areas Campanarios de Azaba and Faia Brava in Western Iberia, both included in the Rewilding Europe initiative. He tells a story about the changes in the countryside here, about land abandonment, an ageing population and half-open landscapes that are quickly turning into bushland. He also describes the opportunities: the rewilding of a huge area where wild nature can stand on its own feet and where wild nature is the new engine of the local economy. A fantastic story, with all images by Wild Wonders of Europe photographer Staffan Widstrand.

The new Rewilding Europe web site launched today

This groundbreaking and very ambitious initiative, with the tag line ”A new beginning. For wildlife. For us”, has launched its new web site today. A very colourful one indeed! Quoting from their Mission statement: Rewilding Europe wants to make Europe a wilder place, with much more space for wildlife, wilderness and natural processes. Bringing back the variety of life for us all to enjoy and exploring new ways for people to earn a fair living from the wild. Rewilding Europe aims to rewild one million hectares of land by 2020, creating 10 magnificent wildlife and wilderness areas of international quality. We will especially focus on Europe’s huge areas of abandoned land, and on providing a viable business case for wild nature. Rewilding Europe is an initiative by WWF Netherlands, ARK Nature, Wild Wonders of Europe and Conservation Capital. All the images are from the Wild Wonders of Europe collection. Check it out https://www.rewildingeurope.com/

Image by Staffan covers the German GEO magazine

An image by Staffan Widstrand/Wild Wonders of Europe is the cover of the German GEO magazine September issue.

”The Wildlife comeback in Europe” is this month’s cover story of the respected magazine, whose German language edition has a print run of some 350 000 copies and well over a million readers. The work done by Wild Wonders of Europe and Rewilding Europe is centre stage in the story. And all the pictures are by the Wild Wonders Dream Team of photographers. In the last months Anke Sparmann, staff writer at the German GEO Magazine travelled across European rewilding reserves. The cover story of GEO’s September issue – published on August 19th – features her journey into a continent getting wilder day by day. Anke experiences the astonishing comeback of some mammals and bird species in Europe and learns about the idea of Rewilding. She takes her readers into some Rewilding Europe project areas: Western Iberia in Spain and Portugal and the Eastern Carpathians in Poland and Slovakia. She wonders how rich our nature used to be – and what it takes to bring back the variety of life to the sparsely populated corners of our continent. Discovering Dutch Oostvaardersplassen, a place famous for its dense wildlife, Anke feels reminded of National Parks in Africa.  She realizes that our wildlife has the potential for an almost unbelievable recovery. Will we ever see it happen on a broader level? It is on us to decide, Anke writes: ”What kind of nature do we want?” She finally visits an area in Germany where the grey wolf has moved in again. Here as in other wild places the GEO author experiences the magic of being in the company of wild animals: ”It felt like reaching a clearing after a long walk through a dark forest. It felt like coming home.” The article is illustrated with pictures from Wild Wonders of Europe.

The winning image shows two endangered Arabian Oryx antelope males in the desert sands,  with their long sabre-like horns engaged in a breeding season battle.
The Award will be forwarded by Sir David Attenborough.
The Arabian Oryx, also called the Al Maha,  is a very symbolic animal species in Arabia, and was at one stage totally extinct in the wild, but thanks to huge efforts over several decades, captive breeding- and re-introduction programmes, combined with strict conservation measures, this heraldic antelope species is now coming back on stage again in the wild in the Arab world. A huge conservation success story.
Widstrand also had three more images awarded in the same competition – of a Saker falcon, a Sand Fish skink lizard and a scene with Arabian mountain gazelles in the dunes.
This means 4 Widstrand shots out of a total of 9 awarded images in the competition.

Wild Wonders of Europe

Europe’s largest – ever photography project has launched its web site at www.wild-wonders.com. Wild Wonders of Europe is an epic, pan-European initiative, aiming to reveal to 700 million Europeans our shared natural heritage and to inspire a desire to safeguard its future. This is also the start of the countdown to the Great Quest, which will begin in May 2008. A Quest in which 50 of Europe’s leading nature photographers will travel on more than 90 assignments to every country in Europe, with a mission to create stunning imagery of the very Crown Jewels among Europe’s natural treasures. From the smallest gems to the wilderness riches, from the Atlantic shores to the Ural Mountains, and from the Arctic tundra to the Mediterranean beaches.
The beauty and interest of the images, the excitement of the Quest and the power of the messages will be presented through a variety of media – locally and nationally – together reaching a huge diversity of audiences, crossing borders of class, culture, age and ethnicity.

Wild Wonders of Europe will span at least 5 years, consisting of a cutting-edge web site, outdoor exhibitions, books, audiovisual picture shows, TV-series, photo competitions, and events all across Europe.
”Europeans know more about nature in Africa than in Europe”
– ”Most of us Europeans today know more about nature in Africa or North America, than we know about Europe. How many Swedes know anything about nature in Bulgaria? How many Irish know anything about nature in Belarus? Or vice versa! This is all part of a natural heritage that we share. But how are you supposed to care about something that you have never even seen or heard about?”” says Staffan Widstrand, photographer and writer from Sweden, Managing Director of Wild Wonders of Europe.
– ”Many think they need to go to America or Australia to experience fascinating wildlife and amazing natural landscapes, but there is lots of it in Europe. We have bison, bears, and wolves, as well as deep canyons, high mountains, rolling steppes, great rivers and turquoise fjords! We would like to inspire Europeans to go out there and better enjoy their own natural heritage, first-hand. But beware, you might fall in love with it all!” says Florian Möllers, photographer and writer from Germany, the project’s Communications Director.
– ”It is clear that presently, a majority of Europeans are becoming increasingly alienated from nature. Wild Wonders of Europe aims to reverse this trend. We want to touch people’s emotions, excite them about nature, make it cool. We want to re-connect people with our natural heritage.our spiritual home,” says Peter Cairns, photographer and writer from Britain, Business Director of Wild Wonders of Europe.
Wild Wonders of Europe is mainly about good news – showcasing the great diversity and richness of nature and the fact that a lot of the most magnificent Wild Wonders of Europe are still around. And, if we look after them well enough, will still be around also in the future.
Wild Wonders of Europe is being made possible through a growing partnership with several major international conservation, media and public organisations along with socially and environmentally conscious corporations.
Among them are National Geographic Magazine, Epson, Bayard Presse, PolarQuest, Noble Caledonia, European Environment Agency, Conservation International, ILCP (The International League of Conservation Photographers), UNEP (United Nations Environmental Programme, The WILD Foundation, and IUCN (The World Conservation Union), Countdown 2010, AEFONA (Association of Spanish Nature Photographers),
Revealing Europe’s amazing natural treasures to the world.
A heritage to share. To enjoy. To protect.

Staffan first Swede with Nikon D3

Staffan Widstrand is the first photographer in Sweden, and one of the first in Europe, to use the new Nikon D3 camera. He will use it on an assignment deep into the Brazilian Amazon and the Pantanal. Widstrand will also try the new 24 – 70/2,8 lens on the expedition.
”I will give it some thorough testing allright. Rainforest humidity, scorching heat, dust and quick-action motifs in dark forests.
”I was very satisfied already with the 2 D2Xs that I have been working with since 2006, but if the D3 holds what it promises, it will be even better at some crucial points. For me the most useful new features will probably be: the possibility to use very high ISO settings with very little color noise, 9 frames per second, improved AF, the live screen, the much bigger viewfinder view and the new long VR-telephoto lenses that come with it.”
Widstrand will show some of his Brazilian images and talk about his impressions from this new super-camera, on a tour arranged by Nikon, to Göteborg, Sweden, November 6-7 and in Malmo, Sweden, November 20-21 2007.

Wild Sweden – New book out in September

Wild Sweden is a labor of love.  A book about the crown jewels of nature of this pretty wild and exotic Northern country, and about a number of really good ways to enjoy it. Including a careful selection of Sweden´s best five star outdoor adventures. It is a fountain of inspiration and temptation.Widstrands powerful images evoke a feeling of actually being out there. A marvel to the many of us, who, in a wide sense, enjoy the Great Outdoors. For a surprisingly long time these riches of wildlife, nature and outdoor joys of this large Scandinavian country have remained a well kept secret.
Wild Sweden takes you on a journey through some of the wildest nature areas of northern Europe, highlighting landscapes and stunning wildlife, as well as showing a number of exciting ways to experience the land. Everything covered by this book is actually within pretty easy reach for just about anyone of us. You don´t have to be Indiana Jones to make it there. Should you consider giving it a try after reading this, there are great local experts, willing to help you out. Every image in the book show values that are directly bookable. Most of these nature tour products even carry the national quality-label Nature´s Best. Wild Sweden offers also a short fact section including a map of Sweden, basic facts for the outdoor traveller, as well as the author’s personal choice of the Top 21 Swedish nature tours. There is also a brief ”Nature Photography for Everyone” section that provides some assistance to the photography-minded traveler. Author Staffan Widstrand is a frequently award-win¬ning, world-class photographer. His powerful images and inspiring texts here convey a very strong message: ”It is all yours to explore. Come here, enjoy, show respect and pay a fair price for the services provided. By doing so, you will join one of the strongest forces for protecting these natural treasures. You will become an integral part of making wild nature economically valuable to local people. You will be a part of making conservation pay for itself. Which is one of the basic ideas behind the word ’ecotourism’. And you will have some great fun.”
Wild Sweden is a book for anyone at all interested in nature, outdoor adventures, photography or the Scandinavian countries.
It makes an excellent gift.
